A Easy Way to Arrange Kitchen Shelves

My small kitchen lacks storage space. So we purchased a commercial grade 6-shelf storage unit last year. I was so happy. I knew now, that I and everyone else would be able to find stuff much easier. To my surprise I was wrong. We all still had to move items around looking for one canned good or another. Knowing there must be a better way of doing this, I recently began searching for some ideas on how to solve this issue.

I ran across many ways to arrange my kitchen shelves, and all of them seem to be good ideas. But most were similar to the method, we had already used. Then I found one that suggested that I arrange my canned goods by color. I am to place all items of one color per shelf. If unable to do that, then divide what shelves I have available up into sections. One example was to place all orange colored items on a shelf. Such as carrots, canned oranges, yams etc. Then make a row for each type of food on that shelf. A carrot row, a row for the oranges, etc. Then do my other canned good in the same way. My greens, reds, yellows, etc.

It also suggest that I use a shelf or section for my dried and boxed goods. And another good tip was to label all shelves and place my most used items at eye level. This system will aid in making out your shopping list as well as restocking your shelves.

The Holidays

When I was younger, I could not wait for the holidays. The holidays were always a great time. They included no school, dinner at  my Kaka's house and falling asleep on a big feather mattress(.For those that do not know of my Kaka, she was my great aunt and the best dang cook east of the Mississippi River.)Anyway, as I grew older things changed for me at the holidays.

The holidays no longer included  a vacation from school nor grand dinners at Kaka's house or even naps on her  feather bed, but that of work and a paper plate covered with foil with big spoonfuls of Kaka's cooking. Which was some comfort. But never less the holidays were changing for me. As time moved on so did I .

I moved out of state and was not able to come in for Thanksgiving or Christmas. My holidays consisted of diners, strangers and a few short phone calls. And thoughts of the feather bed with the homemade quilts.(For those that do not know of feather mattress, and may not understand what it means to sleep on a feather bed .I have but one word for you CLOUDS. Yes, clouds.)Anyhow, the holidays were a changing and did not much feel like the holidays.

I began to have my own dinners for friends and family alike. But nothing seemed to be of those holidays when I was young. My cooking was fair compared to Kaka's  and I had no feather bed in my home. But I tried to make the best of it.
Soon  I was able to move back and I  got to enjoyed her ,the food and yes the feather bed for a few years more. Now Kaka is no longer with us and I still can not cook as well as her nor do I have a feather bed to curl up in. However I have my memories of the holidays, way back when.

May all of your holidays be filled with people you love, great food and even a feather bed.
